Polsko-ukraińska współpraca transgraniczna do niedawna miała charakter doraźny i polegała na licznych kontaktach pomiędzy województwami i „obłastiami" przygranicznymi. Dalszy jej rozwój wymaga jednak przeprowadzenia szczegółowych badań tych terenów oraz stworzenia kompleksowego programu ich rozwoju. Prezentowany model badawczy regionu transgranicznego, rozumiany zarówno jako „odwzorowanie" rzeczywistości, jak i wzór do naśladowania, ma służyć wytyczeniu dróg postępowania badawczego, a także stworzeniu podstaw dla skoordynowanej polityki przestrzenno-gospodarczej Polski i Ukrainy.

Construction of the research model for the transfrontier region should be guided by the following aims: 1) application aim - consisting in determination of practical aspects in the frontier cooperation between Poland and Ukraine and in their realization, 2) research aim - having a task to appraise the present state of physical development of the transfrontier region, 3) concenptional aim - having a task to prepare the development programme for the transfrontier region, taking into account the profits of bilateral cooperation and the present integration processes. The first of the above mentioned aims is presented only in outline, while the two further ones (research and conceptional aims) have been fully explained in the article. The presented model should comprise the following themes: -natural environment and the programme for preventing its degradation, -problems of shaping the settlement network, -problems of developing the technical infrastructure, -problems of growth and cooperation of economic sphere (secciors I, II, III), -present state and development of social infrastructure. This model should facilitate the determination of a new place for the transfrontier region in the physical planning of Poland and Ukraine. The article - without entering into the problems of frontier areas themselves - presents the consecutiveness of research and conceptional proceedings by the analysis of the present state, by formulation of main problems and by presentation of proposed changes which require a reconstruction of existing structures.
