Isotopic methods of gastric emptying in dogs and cats

There are a variety of isotopic methods used for gastric emptying of the stomach amongst which scintigraphy is applied to dogs and cats almost exclusively. In the scintigraphic methods different tracers and foods are used, and the position of the gamma camera, amount of food, duration and test design as well as the elaboration and interpretation of its results can vary. There are many positive aspects of these methods: relatively high accuracy, the possibility of studying gastric emptying by liquids, solids or both, examination of antral motility, transit time in the given intestinal segment and the esophagus. Furthermore, scintigraphic methods are applied in cholescintigraphy and even in intestinal transport studies. Therefore, the standard of these methods is gold in both human and veterinary medicine. These methods also have some limitations . they are quite expensive, require experience in order to be able to apply them correctly and elaborate the range of normal laboratory values for interpreting results. Patients are exposed to radiation but its dose is very small. Despite some negative aspects of these methods, they should be used in clinical centers wherever possible.
