The aim of the study was to develop an ELISA - kit for the examination of swine sera for brucellosis. Lipopolisaccharide (LPS) obtained from the smooth strain of Brucella abortus S 19 was used as the antigen. The above - mentioned ELISA - kit was demonstrated to be specific and sensitive. When testing 87 sera from swine suspected for brucellosis, 81 positive results were obtained in the complement fixation test (CFT), 84 positive results in the ELISA and 78 positive results in the Rose Bengal test (RBT). As it was seen, the sensitivity of the ELISA in comparison with RBT and CFT was highest. When testing 7721 sera during the serological monitoring of clinically healthy pigs, all the investigated sera were negative in the ELISA, whereas 6 sera reacted positively in RBT, but these results were not confirmed in further serological examination - in the CFT. This indicates that the specificity of RBT was lower in comparison with the ELISA. To sum up the developed and evaluated ELISA - kit is superior to other tests used at present for serological monitoring of brucellosis in swine and should be introduced for practical use.
