Food supplements can be the source of ingredients with a nutritional and other physiological effect. In the years 2003-2005 among 3028 food supplements notified to the Chief Sanitary Inspector 51% of products contained herbal ingredients and 26% - vitamins and minerals. The levels of vitamins and minerals in food supplements the most often cover about 100 - 150% of recommended daily allowances. However there are products, which contain the quantities of vitamins and minerals exceeding recommended daily allowances, but not exceeding UL levels (tolerable upper intake level).
