The increased rate of retinal degenerative diseases, especially age-related macular degeneration (AMD), has motivated research on the transplantation of the retina or the special layers of the retina like retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) for more than 30 years. Current opinions on transplantation of the autologus RPE cells in the experimental studies have been reviewed and described, as have the most frequent operation techniques of the transplantation, causes of rejection and the limitations of the RPE transplantation.
