Zachodni region przygraniczny Polski, składający się z czterech województw: szczecińskiego, gorzowskiego, zielonogórskiego i jeleniogórskiego, ma istotne znaczenie w krajowym systemie gospodarki przestrzennej. Stanowi poza tym „wschodnią bramę" dla Unii Europejskiej, będąc jednocześnie ważnym, ale i pełnym problemów obszarem graniczącym z Republiką Federalną Niemiec. W gospodarce tego regionu (w granicach administracyjnych) zasadniczą rolę odgrywa przemysł, którego potencjał, poddany niezbędnym procesom restrukturyzacyjnym, może przyczynić się do szybszej integracji Polski z Europą Zachodnią.

The article presents the possibilities and trends towards restructuring of industry in the zone of four voivodships adjoining to the German Federal Republic. These areas (the frontier region comprising the Szczecin, Gorzów, Zielona Góra and Jelenia Góra voivodships) do not make a functionally compact unit. However, their generał feature is the connecting (but also dividing) border line between Poland and Germany. In the economy of this region, a basie role is played by the industry. Its possibilities and supposed trends for restructuring may facilitate the integration of Poland with West Europę. The article deals with the present state of industry in particular voivodships of this region and with its both strong and weak sides. The author points also out to the trends and ways of restructuring of some more important enterprises. The Polish frontier region has a great productive potential being of basie importance for the national economy. At the same time, the present situation reąuires an inflow of great investment outlays for modernization purposes.
