Presented are the contributions of fractions bound to iron and manganese oxides in total concentrations of Cu, Pb, Zn, and As in 20 samples of polluted soils collected in two regions: the protection zones of copper smelters and the vicinity of metal ore mining center Żeleźniak in the Kaczawskie Mts. Sequential extraction was carried out according to the method by Zeien and Brummer, in which 7 fractions were separated; in this number those specifically bound (f2), occluded in manganese oxides (f3), as well as occluded in amorphous (f5) and crystalline (f6) iron oxides. Speciation results differed widely among the soils. Metal species bound to manganese oxides made up 1-20% of total Cu, 1-26% Pb, 4-27% Zn, and <1% As; those bound to amorphous iron oxides composed 3-24% Cu, 1-54% Pb, 3-25% Zn, and 42-90% As; whereas those bound to crystalline iron oxides constituted 3-29% Cu, 1-53% Pb, 9-34% Zn, and 5-46% As. On the basis of f3, f5 and f6 fractions, "sorption coefficients" were calculated which determine the capacities of soil components to bind metals. Those coefficients, figured up for cationic metals make the following order: MnOx>> FeOx am> FeOx cr., whereas the sequence of As sorption coefficients is: FeOx am>> MnOx ~ FeOx cr.
