The aim of the study was to determine the importance of USG techniques for the detection of developmental anomalies of joints and the modification of USG techniques being used so far. Ten German shepherd puppies (each three-weeks-old) were examined. A Medison USG appliance with B presentation and with a 7.5 MHz linear scanner was used. Three different placements of the animals and three different positions of the ultrasound scanner were used. The puppy in the first position was laid on one side and the probe was applied perpendicularly to the examined joint. In the second position the puppy was also laid on one side. The probe was leaned on a greater trochanter and led anteroabdominally, slightly medially. Puppies in the third position were laid dorsolaterally, the examined limb was abducted externally and the probe applied to the groin parallel to the longitudinal axis of the body. The results showed that ultrasonographical methods can be successfully used for a diagnosis of the anatomical regularity of dog’s hip joints. The inclination of dorsal acetabular margin can be estimated by ultrasonographical methods. Because of that and the possibility of dynamic investigations, USG methods are very helpful in the diagnosis of canine hip dysplasia.
