Studies were made on the content of nitrogen substances and chlorides, as well as the counts of ammonifying, nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria in the underground waters of water-bearing formations in the Omulewski Aquifer in Mazuria. Water samples were collected from 11 water-wells (20-67 m deep) and 3 piezometric wells (bore-holes) (6.8-23.5 m). These wells were located in forested areas at Sedańsk and Narty, areas used by individual farmers at Jedwabno and Kot, and in commercial agricultural and animal breeding farms at Janowo, Dzierzki, Wesolówko, Wielbark, Przezdzięk, Baranowo and Wyżegi. Organie nitrogen (0.01-5.07 mg/dm3), NH4-N (<0.01-7.70 mg/dm3), N02-N (<0.001-0.192 mg/dm3) and N03-N (<0.01-29.00 mg/dm3) content in water samples collected from water-wells and piezometric bore-holes varied depending on land use and sampling date. Underground waters were less polluted by these substances in forested land and more on arable land. Numbers of bacteria of the nitrogen cycle usually did not exceed 14000 MPN/1 cm3 (bacteria liberating NH3 and H2S from peptone), 2400 (Nitrobacter), 11000 (bacteria reducing N03-N to N02-N), 14000 (bacteria reducing N02-N to NH4-N), 46000 (bacteria reducing N02-N to N2/N20) and 140000 (Nitrosomonas and bacteria reducing NO3 —N to gaseous nitrogen) MPN/100 cm3. Frequently these bacteria were not found in volume water inoculations. There were also no clear relationships between well depth and the content of nitrogen compounds, chlorides and nitrogen cycle bacteria.
