The development of insect cell culture techniques for the production of insect pathogenic viruses has been reviewed, with emphasis on process scale-up and genetic enhancement of viral pesticides. Insect cells in culture are currently the subject of great interest as superior hosts for the efficient production of biologicals with applications in health care, in agriculture and forestry. The very prominent system used both in research and in commercial scale application involves insect cells transfected with baculovirus expression vectors for abundant formation of recombinant proteins, vaccines and biopesticides.
