Data from literature regarding silage quality and storage losses caused by the effluents were reviewed, compared and analysed. The dry matter content in ensiled crop was an important factor affecting effluent production. It was found that the additive of formic acid to conserved green crop increased the effluent of juice from silage. Information on effluent losses was consistent across a number of sources; it could be summarized as a simple relationship between losses percentage and dry matter content.
