In some European countries slugs can cause significant damages in a wide range of agricultural and horticultural crops. In Poland over the last decade they became a senous threat to arable crops, mainly to winter oilseed rape, winter cereals and vegetables. Crops are affected by numerous species of slugs but under Polish climatic condiho. ns th e most 1· mportant are: Deroceras reticulatum and in some regions Arion lusitanicus, Arion rufus and Arion distinctus. Slug control is carried out with molluscicide pellets and agronomic measures. These methods are commonly used in various countries and are considered as one of the most effective in plant protection against slugs. Simultaneously non-synthetic compounds are tested for slug control. The aim of these surveys is to find and implement into practice these alternative methods utilizing natural plant products such as: attractants, phago-stimulants, antifeedants and natural molluscicides in slug control. The important role in strategy of plant protection against slugs may play alternative food sources for slugs. There are some chemical compounds occurring naturally in plants that show activity against slugs. It has been possible to select a number of compounds that demonstrated stimulative, inhibitive or ceasing effect on slug feeding. Several compounds with poisonous effect on slugs were found out as weil. However, it seems that only few will have a chance to be implemented into practice.
