In 36% tomato products samples out of 50 analysed, the occurrence of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural was confirmed. Using TLC, 5-hydroksymethylfurfural was found to be characterized both by Rf value, and the fluorescence with 3-methyl-2- benzothiazolinone hydrazone, approximated those of patulin. The separation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural from patulin by HPLC was achieved, and the presence of patulin in all samples under test, was excluded.
