In recent years a certain acceleration of the concentration of land in larger family farms, adopted for the purpose of this paper as 15 ha and over, is observed. In the years 1987-1994 the number of peasant holdings decreased from 2235 to 2030, that is by 9.2% whereas the participation of this group of farms increased from 6 to 7.8%. During the same time the average overall size of a single farm of 15 ha or over increased as follows: 1987-22.4 ha (100%), 1990-23.1 (103.1%) and in 1994-29.2 ha (130.4%). The intensity of land concentration processes in these farms was differentiated and the increase in the area of arable land in the years 1990-1994 calculated per unit farm was strong in the southern (44% increase) and south-western (38% increase) macroregions. average in the central, south-eastern and northern macroregions (28% increase in each) and the lowest in the north-eastern (11%), central-eastern (15%), central-western (16%) and metropolitan (17%) macroregions. Farms 15 ha or over are distinguished by better economic condition that the average peasant farm but some of them run unprofitable production and are able to ensure necessary measures related to agricultural production and subsistence only because of income from other sources. Analysis of the formation and division of the income of farms 15 ha and over reveals that as a group they are distinguished by accumulation which is twice the average in the country, even though in 1992, which was a very difficult year for agriculture, a third of these farms showed negative accumulation and barely produced enough food to live. In the following years this situation improved but its scope was limited. Concentration of land was paralleled by changes in productive potential and in level and structure of production. Adjustment to the market favored economic effectiveness, although still only a third of these farms reaches a level of accumulation which can be considered a real source for modernization of their productive machinery and modernization.
