Field beans of the Nadwiślański variety were sown on plots in three vegetative seasons, each time at three periods: early, late and very late. The dynamics of plant development phases as well as an increase in leaf area, biomass formation and seed yield were determined. The earliest sowing date and vernalization were followed by an acceleration of generative growth and therefore kernel filling occurred during periods of more abounding sunshine. The res Lilting seed weight was largely dependent upon the size of leaf area and duration of leaf photosynthetic activity, starting from the early stages of plant development. The dependence was observed in the form of significant positive values of correlation coefficients between the number of pods and seeds, seed weight, harvest index (HI), biomass duration (BMD) of overground parts and leaf area duration (LAD) in the consccutive stages of development. However, an average number of seeds in a pod was to a high degree independent of conditions of plant growth. Its drastic reduction was observed only under conditions least favourable for biomass formation. Optimal 24-hour temperature for a leaf area growth amounted to some 15—17ºC. Heavy rainfall occurring from emergence to the beginning of flowering was responsible for permanent delay in leaf area and plant biomass growth. During the intensive growth, competition between roots and overground parts of plants was observed, which manifested itself in a significant negative correlation between leaf area duration (LAD) and root biomass duration (BMD).
