As so far, GM plants in Poland are grown at large only exceptionally, e.g. Mon810 corn mostly experimentally on 3 thousand ha. In view of the controversies heard from abroad, concerning possible negative consequences for the wild species and natural ecosystems, here it is argued that Poland needs: (a) a moratorium on a release of GM crops into the country’s farmland and a blockade against any import of the GM-based feeds, (b) an independent domestic research on the possible environmental (chiefly in soil ecology) consequences of the GMO spread. Under Polish fine-grained farmland mosaics it is impossible to keep genetically modified and traditional crops of the same species permanently isolated. Our very dense rural population causes that a very fine-grained mosaic of crops appears especially vulnerable to “a genetic pollution” with modified strains of the cultivated plants. More than that, some biological data indicate, that modified transgens may even reach wild plant species, turning them into “superweeds”. With time they may invade even the nature reserves and national parks. Serious reduction of the country’s biodiversity seems quite realistic, which again, supports a need to start independent research of possible negative side-effects. Special interdisciplinary project, possibly supported financially by the Polish Academy of Sciences and two ministries of Agriculture and of Environment, should be started as soon as possible. To have time for own research a c. 15-year moratorium on the spread of GMO is urgently needed
