A modern calf rearing systems are characterized by feeding calves with solid feed ad libitum from the first days of life. The purpose of such a practice is to promote solid feed intake and accelerate gastrointestinal tract development. Solid feed for diary calves is based mainly on concentrate. High content of easily degradable carbohydrates stimulates rumen papillae development and it enables early weaning of calves. On the other hand, components of solid feed characterized by low rumen degradability are the most effective in feeding calves after weaning. The proper structure of feed can be achieved by feeding peletted calf starter or whole corn grain or both mixed together. It makes it possible to exclude hay feeding in the first weeks of life as a structural component of the diet. Positive effect of probiotics, live yeast cultures, yeast metabolites and digestive enzymes in solid feed on calf rearing have been discussed.
