The paper aimed to review the current tendencies in the nutrition of high yielding cows of high genetic merits. The factors that should be considered in the model of nutrition were discussed as follows: metabolic disorders, efficiency of reproduction, body condition scoring, system of diet formulation, quality of forages, feeding strategy, feed additives. It was concluded that the changes in genetic potential of dairy cows in Poland should extort the research projects mainly on the nutrent requirements, nutritive value of feedstuffs, feeding in different lactation stages and feeding strategies. The teaching programmes at Agricultural Universities as well as the extension projects should consider these aspects.
