The water resources in Poland are rather poor. Moreover, they are unevenly distributed in space and time. Same human activities in many cases decreased the water resources, affecting the frequency of occuring such extreme phenomena as the floods and draughts. Development of rural areas depends on the quantity and quality of water resources. On the other band, proper water management on rural areas may be helpful in minimalizing loses of water resources and reducing negative influences of the agriculture on natural flora and fauna; it also allows to enrich the biological diversity. The water management should be adjusted to the type of agricultural landscape. One of the methods to improving moisture conditions is increasing the water retention abilities of small basins. The studies and approximate calculations carried out showed that the treatment consisting in increase of swampy areas, number of water pools and small water reservoirs, damming up of eroded rivers and canals, improvement of the soil structure, regulation of outflows from drainage systems etc., may significantly enrich the water resources in river basins. Proper water management allows to supply water of good quality both, for the natural environment and for the agricultural and communal needs.
