The participants included 33 patients of the Andrology Clinic. The concentration of zinc, cadmium or selenium in blood and seminal plasma was used as the criterion for assigning patients to the individual groups. Complete sperm morphology was evaluated in all patients. Atomic absorption spectrometry was used to determine cadmium concentration in blood serum and seminal plasma, while zinc and selenium in blood serum and seminal plasma were determined by the flame method. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the blood-testis barrier for cadmium, zinc and selenium, and the effect of those elements on semen morphology. It was found that increasing semen cadmium concentration resulted in reduced proportion of normal sperm cells found in the semen. No correlation was found between the study elements in blood and semen, which may point to a high effectiveness of the blood-testis barrier.
