Hoof lesions and related with this disorder locomotion disturbances are significant problems in high yield milk cows’ herds. The most frequently occurring lesions are: white line separation, heel erosion and sole hemorrhages. Scientific investigations concerning hoof lesions are difficult, because they demand numerous and long term (minimum 200 days) observations. According to research to date no therapy exists that radically prevents the occurrence of locomotion disturbance. The addition of biotin mainly results in the reduction of the incidence of white line separation, but has a lesser effect on remaining hoof diseases. Dietary biotin is not intensively degraded in rumen. Biotin could be applied per os for the duration of a few months at a dose of 20 mg/day for cows in lactation or 10 mg/day for dry cows. The addition of Zn-methionine primarily cures heel erosion. The latest American investigations on the combination of Zn-methionine, Mn-methionine, Cu-lysine and Co-glucoheptonate (CTM-4 Plex-Zinpro) usage are promising. The lack of unambiguous data on this subject as well as some controversial results necessitate conducting further research on the possibility of eliminating or decreasing the number of hoof diseases by nutritional means, especially that it could be easy to administer and enables a much broader application in practice.
