The results of studies on the ensilage of fresh lucerne with and without additives as well as of dried lucerne have been summarized. Lucerne as a raw material for the production of silage does not meet the conditions described by the term "usefulness for ensilage". For this reason it is necessary to improve the ability of the ensilage of green fodder by pre-drying or through monitoring the microbiological process by the addition of various agents - preparations stimulating the production of lactic acid. Good quality silage is obtained from lucerne when the following additives are used: a) sugar, b) chemical preparations consisting of strong acids, c) inocula, d) pre-dried green fodder.
