The magnesium concentration in blood serum and seminal plasma from 70 stallions of Thoroughbred, Great Polish Horses and Polish Primitive Horses in relation to semen characteristics was determined by atomic absorption spectrometer method. The mean (± S.D.) concentration of Mg in stallion in the breeding season was 0.83 ± 0.09 mmol/l in the blood serum and 3.13 ± 1.27 mmol/l in the seminal plasma. Regarding, the Mg values in three age groups (≤ 11 years of age, > 11 years of age and ≥ 14 years of age), we did not find any age influence. The blood serum Mg concentration with the seminal plasma Mg concentration showed a negative correlation. The magnesium in blood serum did not correlate with semen characteristics. Mg in seminal plasma correlated positively with the concentration of spermatozoa (stallions ≤ 11 years of age, all stallions), total sperm number (all stallions) and concentration of Ca in seminal plasma (≤ 11 years of age, > 11 years of age, all stallions) and negatively with the secondary changed spermatozoa (all stallions).
