The effect of 26 strong drinks (beer, wine, vodka, brandy) on prothrombin activation and thrombin activity was assessed. Compounds which inhibit prothrombin activation in the extrinsic system were found in 20, those which inhibit the activation in the intrinsic system were found in all, and those which decrease thrombin activity were found in 13 of the test drinks. These compounds were found both in the distillate and in the postdistillation residue. At 7,36% w/v, ethanol slightly inhibited activation of prothrombin in the intrinsic system, at 1,84% w/v in inhibited activation of this proenzyme in the intrinsic system , and at 3,68% w/v it decreased thrombin activity
