Conflicts between nature conservation and land-use and management are common. Well structured negotiations can be a good vehicle for resolution. There are two major categories of negotiation strategies: position-based negotiations (pushing your own solution, win-lose) and problem-based negotiations (creating environment for consensus or a win-win situation). There are the following steps in good negotiations: - Preparation to negotiations, including identifying conflict from your own perspective and from the perspective of the other party; - Preparation of negotiation team (technical and interpersonal skills, authority to make decisions); - Planning for negotiation process (order in which issues will be discussed, case-making, ways to sustain agreement); - Developing logistics/procedures (where and when negotiations should be held, who should chair, speaking time, recording etc.)
