Prevalence of foot-and-mouth disease antibodies in cattle the ring vaccination zone around Zdunska Wola

A study on the seroprevalence of FMD antibodies in cattle in the „ring” vaccination zone was performed. Out of 550 samples of sera examined by LPB ELISA, 240 samples (44%) have been found positive to FMDV type A,O and/or C (ELISA titres > log 1.6). The highest Ievel of antibodies was found for FMDV type O₁BFS; about 10% of tested sera had titres > log 3.01. A half-life of maternal antibodies in sera of calves born of seropositive dams was estimated. The high level of antibodies was detected in sera taken from new-born calves aged 5-10 days. In the next days, a significant decline of titres was observed. The level of FMD antibodies in beestings of dams was the highest during the first 10 days after parturition. After 14 days, the antibodies were undetectable in the milk.
