Periodontal diseases constitute a very serious problem regarding the treatment of small animals. The majority of dogs over five years show lesions within the gingivas, oral mucosa and dental crown’s surface. Untreated periodontal disease always progresse and effects the animal’s health bringing about pharingitis, gastroenteritis and sometimes endocarditis. In some cases it is associated with such systemic diseases as diabetes, leptospirosis or uraemia. Treatment usually begins by doing operation in anaesthetized animals with the aid of an ultrasonic scaler (Piezodent D-40) and other apparatus. Further treatment is performed by antiphlogistic drugs, astringents, pallative agents and chemiotherapy. Dental prophylaxis is based on regular hygiene of the teeth and checkups.
