Urodilatin is a natriuretic peptide member of the A-type natriuretic peptide family which has been isolated from urine. This paracrine hormone is secreted in the distal tubules and acts on luminal receptors of collecting duct cells. Urodilatin plays an important role in the regulation of body fluid volume and electrolyte balance. It inhibits water and sodium resorption in the collecting ducts by interaction with guanylyl cyclase-coupled receptor A, the same receptor by which atrial natriuretic peptide acts. The result of urodilatin action is the increase of natriuresis and diuresis.
