The studies were carried out on 694 gilts and sows aged between 8 months and 5 years divided into two groups. The animals of group I were given selenium in the form of injection and group II orally. A dose of the drug was 0.11—0.23 per 1 kg of body weight. It was administered once at day 5—7 before mating, twice, i. e. before mating and in the half of pregnancy and at day 108 of gestation. The control group was established with 309 sows being in a similar physiological status as experimental groups. In all animals there were conducted clinical examinations, and the index of conception rate, the numbers of piglets, the interparturition period and reproduction rate were analysed. In addition, in some sows of group I and II, which had received selenium before copulation, there was determined the content of selenium and tokoferol in the blood. It was found that selenium administration in the doses applied influenced effectively the conception rate and shortened an interparturition period. Besides, the experiment showed that the application of selenium per os was more effective in older sows than in young pigs.
