Use of endoscopy in the diagnosis and treatment of tendon sheaths in the horse

In equine medicine pathologies involving tendons, ligaments, and tendon sheaths are a serious problem. The use of new methods of visualising these structures derived from endoscopy can reduce trauma and complications caused by diagnostics and surgical procedures. This paper reviews the development of endoscopy in veterinary medicine and its apllication in equine orthopedics. The authors reviewed literature to present current concepts on the diagnosis and treatment of tendon sheath disorders in the horse. The paper suggests that minimally invasive surgical procedures involving the tendon sheath, such as tenoscopy, can produce better results than conventional medication and surgical treatment. It also points out that tenoscopy is the most specific and reliable diagnostic tool for tendon sheaths. This method revealed longitudinal tears of tendons within the tendon sheath, which is a new pathological condition never described before. In the authors’ opinion, tenoscopy procedures are safe and minimize the rate of complications, but require experience from the surgeon because of the risk of damaging surrounding structures, such as nerves.
