Organic farming, once seen as serving a limited niche market, is perceived, in the wake of BSE and foot-and-mouth epidemics, as a viable alternative to traditional farming, capable of providing high quality food at a reasonable price to the consumer, with minimal stress to the environment. Article presents the principles of organic farming and discusses the factors influencing growth of the area of organically farmed land and the increase of the number of organic holdings during last decade.
