Consequences of the withdrawal of antibiotic growth promoters from animal feeding

The problem of the possible consequences of withdrawing antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) from animal diets has been studied. Both a negative impact, e.g. performance and animal’s health, as well as possible advantages (improvement of nutritive and dietetic values of animal origin food) were indicated. The possibilities of the utilization of alterative feed additives to AGPs were also demonstrated. The substitution of AGPs in animal husbandry should be treated on a complex basis, taking into account the optimalization of animal nutrition with the appropriate utilization of feed additives (pro- and prebiotics, organic acids, enzymes, herbs) and proper veterinary prophylaxis as well as the assurance of the welfare of animal maintenance.
