Lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic, zinc, copper, and iron were determined in 237 intensive rearing hens and 220 village hens collected in 47 regions of Poland in 1994. The mean levels of the toxic elements (Cd, Hg and As) in both groups of eggs were generally low, around 0,01 mg/kg. Concentrations of lead and cadmium in the majority of samples were beyond the detection limit of the employed method (Pb - 0,01 mg/kg, Cd - 0,001 mg/kg). Significantly higher lead concentrations were found in the village - hen eggs than in those collected from the intensive rearing hens (0,024 and 0,007 mg/kg, respectively). Animal rearing system had no effect on the content of other studied elements in egg samples.
