Plant growth and development depend on light for photosynthesis and photomorphogenesis. Plant tissue cultures also require light, but to a lesser degree, to regulate mainly morphogenetic processes. This article reviews the effect of light quality and interaction between light quality and growth regulators in the growth, development and regeneration of callus, forming and growth of shoots and roots in vitro. It was found that mainly red and blue light induce or stimulate regeneration in callus and differentiation of shoots and roots of many plants. Interaction between red or blue light and growth substances in morphogenesis was found. Also, yellow, green and UV lights regulate differentiation and growth of explants of some plants in vitro.
