Effects of selenium administered as selenium yeast on oxidative processes during experimental hypercholesterolemia induced in rabbits by adding egg yolk product to the fodder were studied. Decreased activity of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase was shown in the hypercholes- terolaemic rabbits, while selenium administration increased glutathione peroxidase activity in the kidneys and decreased glutathione reductase activity in the liver. Selenium administration increased also the activity of glutathione peroxidase in the liver and kidneys, and of catalase in the erythrocytes, liver and kidneys. Lower activity of glutathione reductase in red blood cells and liver, and increased activity of that enzyme in kidney were also recorded in the rabbits after selenium administration. Superoxide dismutase activity remained unchanged throughout the experiment.
