Development of the irrigation systems and accompanying environmental, economic and social issues create a number of technological problems that need to be solved urgently. The most important of these problems are: the utilization of irrigation systems, modernization of existing systems, and introduction of the modern technology. Basic technological problems deal with: low level of systems' utilization, the necessity to modernize existing systems and the introduction of modern technology. The approach advised here would be an integrated use of the resources such as water, soil and atmosphere, the improvement of techniques and technology, as well as monitoring and control of their impact on the enviromnent. The sustainable agricultural production demands morc and more technologies and techniques adapted precisely to the demands of plants, and creating balanced technological, economical and ecological systems. One of the conditions to reach this goal is an application of resources-saving irrigation systems and re-utilization of water. These demands are fulfilled by micro irrigation systems. The solving of environmental and technological problems demands many research programmes. They should encompass such issues as the effectiveness of irrigation systems, an appropriate water and nutrient solution management, biological assessment of the systems impact, minimizing the impact on environment, new constructive solutions of economic and social problems, as well as the education and advisory.
