Integration processes in Europe, opening of the Polish-German frontier, changes in economic and management conditions and in physical planning, they all create new possibilities of developing the areas in Western Poland. One of the elements of this development (according to the proecological policy adopted by the state) is and may be the ecotourism. The ecotourism is understood as management and use of environment, differentiated and dependent on conditions and possibilities of the natural environment, ensuring a full use of its values with simultaneous preservation of its natural functions. A starting point was the preparation of a synthetic picture of the present state of natural environment which may become the Ecologic System of Protected Areas. A basis for its creation was a complex characteristic of the natural environment. The next step was the characteristic of the present state of development of Western Poland from the point of view of touristic requirements and the analysis of its results from the standpoint of possibilities to developm the ecocourism, as well as the problems of mutual relations between the present and potential use of tourisic values of environment, on the one hand, and between the existing and expected state of its endangerement, on the other hand. By means of regionalization, there have been separated some diagnostic regions differing in their natural conditions, in their protecton systems, in the degree of their touristic attractiveness, management from the standpoint of tourism, inflow intensity of tourists and degree of transformations and endangerement of natural environment. Designaton of diagnostic regions is the final stage of the diagnosis, being a basis for preparation of the concept of ecotourism development in Western Poland. Taking into account the resolutions resulting from this diagnosis, ideological assumptions deriving from the proecological policy of the state and basic assumptions concerning both social and economic realities, a typological analysis of regions has been performed from the standpoint of both their potential possibilities of ecotourism development and possible conflicts which may result from confrontation of the needs of environmental protecton with the processes of its degradation, pointing out to the problems requiring proper solutions and relevant trends of actions to be undertaken in distinguished regions.
