Here we report the first occurrence of Lepturalia nigripes (D E G EER) in Poland since more than 80 years. This species belongs to the rarest longhorn beetles in Europe, which may be linked to its habitat requirements, namely the preference for burned sites in forests where the species inhabits standing birch snags killed and/or weakened by fire. Currently, fires belong to rare phenomena, both in managed as well as in protected forests, and therefore many fire-dependent (i.e., pyrophilous) species, including L. nigripes, may not find suitable conditions for their development. To prevent decline of pyrophilous species, fire-affected sites should be at least partly retained especially in protected areas. Furthermore, in such places (reserves, national parks) the use of controlled burning should be considered as a tool for the conservation of this declining group of organisms.
