It was found that injection with living vaccines, prepared of non-virulent strains of Mycobacterium intracellulare serotype 5 and 16, BCG, or an inactivated vaccine made of strain D₄ER Mycobacterium avium caused in a most of birds a delayed hypersensitivity, presence of specific agglutinin and increased percentage of neutrophilic granulocytes in blood. None of these vaccines protected birds against of intramuscular infection with virulent strain of Mycobacterium avium. The heighest protective effect, measured by survival time and intensity of tuberculous lesions, was observed in hens after vaccination with vaccine prepared of Mycobacterium intracellulare strain, serotype 5.
