The aim of presented studies was to establish a computer link to the decision support system for chemical control of cutworms considering the needs of sugar industry. A chemical treatment was applied using the pest warning system, and taking into consideration phenological criteria such as the sums of heat and effective temperatures for the cutworm development. As a result of collaboration with the sugar factory Pfeifer & Langen Poland S.A. a computational programme was developed to determine the predicted date of chemical treatment against cutworms. The best results were obtained when the treatment was performed at the pest developmental stage L2, and beet plants were at the leaf rosette phase. Due to unfavorable weather conditions a few days delay of performing the treatment was possible. A validation of the presented cutworm control method under field conditions revealed a high level of its efficacy. It was stated that the date of treatment determined on the basis of phenological criteria was comparable to the one based on a systematic and time consuming cutworms’ monitoring.
