The aim of this paper is to examine the air pollution in the Polish subregions from years 1998 to 2012 by type of pollutants (carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter, expressed in kilograms per capita) using spatial dynamic shifts-share method. In details, this tool is used to analyse the pace of change in air pollution in subregions, by category of pollutant and region, as well as for all subregions as a whole (the reference area). The study also analyses each subregion’s share and identifi es structural and regional (local and spatial) factors in the volume of the net effect (overall pollution in Poland). It also takes into consideration a spatial weights matrixes, which allows to include spatial aspects in the study. However, due to the multidirectional cross-border nature of the pollution different types of matrixes were applied (based on the contiguity order of subregions and on estimated spatial trends of the emitted quantity of pollutants). The study uses elements of exploratory spatial data analysis.
