Reunification of the German Democratic Republic with the Federal Republic of Germany provided for the first incorporation of a post-communist economy into the European Union. The principles upon which this happened determined the nature of the process - under which the fusing of the two countries into one was at the same time the integration of the former GDR into the EU. Thus, the five new German Lander had to achieve with their economies what Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungry and other formerly-communist countries applying for membership are required to do with theirs - i.e. a move from a centrally-planned economy to a free-market one and a change in the form of ownership of economic enterprises. The process of change in the agriculture of the new Länder did not lead to the anticipated rise in significance of family-owned farms (as has happened in EU member states). In spite of a decline in the number of farms covering more than 1000 ha. their participation in the agrarian structure remains high. The restructuring of agriculture in eastern Germany was much more rapic, albeit greatly facilitated by financial assistance from both the Federal Government in Bonn and the EU.
