The aim of the experiment was the evaluation of a post- -parturient period in cows in which selenium was applied in two different periods before parturition. The observations were done of 117 cows in three groups; group I received im 50 mg of SE as sodium selenite at day 21 before parturition, group II received an analogous dose of Se at day 10 before parturition, and group III not treated with Se served as a control. There were not found significant differences between groups I, II and group III in the course of post-parturient period and uterus involution, however, in group II more cows finished uterus involution prior to 30th day after parturition. In groups I and II a frequency of retention of placenta, still born calves, metritis, afunction and disfunction of the ovaries and the oviduct inflammations was respectively 10.2 and 10.2; 0 and 2.6; 33.4 and 18.0; 25.6 and 23.2; 15.3 and 2.6%, days to the first service ad service period was 57.4 and 59.9 and/or 86.9 and 106.0 days. Meanwhile, in control cows these values reached respectively 17.9; 5.1; 30.8; 35.9; and 10.3% and 79.2 and 128 days. Simultaneously a mean Se concentration in blood serum before Se injection was 19 ng/ml. The performed investigations suggest that application of Se in cows at day 10 before parturition influenced more positively the course of post parturient period than Se applied at the same dose at day 21 before parturition.
