A field experiment was undertaken to determine the effect of pesticides (fungicides and herbicides) on the population numbers of bacteria, fungi and actinomycetes. The study was aimed at comparing the effects of traditional pesticides vised in plant protection for a number of years with those of their modern equivalents. All the pesticides compared (traditional and the improved ones) were found to exert similar effects on the number of fungi. The number of actinomycetes was modified to a greater extent by the modern pesticides (formulation with an additional adjuvant). Bacteria appeared to be the most susceptible to the presence of pesticides (in both forms) in the soil.
