Over 183 million birds including about 13 million hens, 155 million slaughter chickens, almost 13 million turkeys, over 7 million ducks and 4 million geese were slaughtered under veterinary control in Poland in 1987. Clinical and post mortem examinations showed that over 1.6 million pieces were determined as unfit for use, ie 0.9 per cent. The highest precentage regaded as untit for use was registered in case of hens (1.34°/»), the lowest one in turkeys (0.32"/»), geese (0.46%), ducks (0.53°/o), chickens (0.9%). In the period from 1972 there was a drop of tuberculosis in poultry from 3.56°/» to 0.39% and an increase of salmonellosis from 0.008% to 0.036%. Approximately 75®/o of birds was regarded as unfit for use bacause of emaciation and injuries of tissues during slaughter and dressing.
