Relations between the natural environment and settlements in several Asiatic countries were examined in some MA theses submitted in the Department of Regional Geography. The impact of the natural environment on the distribution of people and settlement systems can be either positive or negative, providing attractions or settlement barriers. Surveys confirmed the importance of relations between the natural environment and settlements in India, Indonesia and Nepal. In the case of Bangladesh, however, no such an impact could be observed, which might be the consequence of the country's huge population density ( over 900 people/sq km) and the need to populate areas characterized by highly adverse environmental conditions, even those that are exposed to the danger of annual flooding. The findings imply that the character of the relations between the natural environment and settlement processes is multidimensional.
