Laboratory and field observations were done from July to September 1989. Bees in one main group (A) were fed every day in the morning and in the evening 2 ml of a medicated sirup, and those in a main group В obtained a medicated sirup twice, at a day 0 and day 2. In each of the main groups group I was given sirup containing 50 mg of Apitol/20 ml (8.75 mg of cymiazole hydrochloride as an active substance), II — 100 mg of Apitol/20 ml (17.5 mg of an active substance), III — 200 mg of Apitol/20 ml (35.0 mg of an active substance) and group IV — 400 mg of Apitol/20 ml (70.0 mg of an active substance). Controls were fed only sugar sirup. It was found that Apitol applied everyday at a dose of 50 mg/20 ml caused mortality of 10% of bees, at a dose of 100 mg/ml 11.6% of bees, at a dose of 200 mg/ml 29.6% and at a dose of 400 mg/ml 38.3% of bees. The greatest losses of bees were noted between 24 and 48 h of the experiment. Toxicity of Apitol used twice was low. Apitol at a dose of 200—400 mg/20 ml caused losses of 12.6—14.2% of bees and at a dose of 50 mg/20 ml 7.0% of bees. The same number of bees died in controls. Field studies were performed in bee colonies with brood. Apitol at a dose of 2.0 g/colony in 500 ml of sugar sirup was used one (group I), twice (group II) and three times (group III) at week intervals. The efficacy of treatment of Varroa with one of Apitol was 82%, two doses 87% and three doses of the drug 91%.
