Owies szorstki (Avena strigosa Schreb.) należy do bardzo starych roślin uprawnych. W Polsce był uprawiany głównie na Podhalu do roku 1950. Obecnie znany jest tylko jako rzadki chwast zbóż jarych i roślina ruderalna. W północno- wschodniej Polsce od kilku lat obserwuje się jednak szybkie rozprzestrzenianie tego gatunku. Przeprowadzone doświadczenia poletkowe wskazują, że plony owsa szorstkiego są niższe od plonów owsa siewnego. Jednak na glebach lekkich i mniej urodzajnych różnice te są niewielkie. Biorąc pod uwagę wysokie wartości pokarmowe Avena strigosa Schreb., a także, że ta stara roślina uprawna będąca zabytkiem kultury rolniczej, zawiera wiele cennych genów - należy rozważyć (choćby na niewielką skalę) możliwość jej uprawy.

Bristle oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) is one of very old cultivated plants. It was cultivated in Poland until 1950, mainly in the Tatra Highlands. Now it is only known as a weed growing on the fields of spring crops, and as a ruderal plant. However, fast propagation of this species in North-Eastern Poland has been observed for several years. The field experiments conducted so far indicate that the yield of bristle oat is lower than that of cultivated oat. However, in the case of light and less fertile soil these differences are slight. Taking into account high nutritive value of Avena strigosa Schreb. and the fact that this old cultivated plant constitutes an agricultural monument and contains valuable genes, the possibility of its cultivation (at least on a small scale) should be considered.
