In Poland, several isolates of Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) belonging to EU and CH2 genotypes have been found since 2003. Majority of them belong to CH2 strain and are represented by two extremely different pathotypes: mild and necrotic. Mild CH2 isolates did not induce any remarkable symptoms on tomato leaves. In 2010 and 2011, the PepMV isolates inducing severe yellowing symptoms on tomato plants were collected. Analysis revealed that new pathotype designated as PepMV-Zl belongs to CH2 genotype. PepMV-Zl shared 99% sequence identity in coat protein and triple gene block 3 with previously identified mild and necrotic isolates of CH2 genotype. However, single nucleotide substitutions were identified suggesting that minor nucleotide differences may affect the symptoms and virus virulence.
