Oleaginous microorganisms including selected strains of yeast, fungi and algae are defined by their ability to accumulate more than 20% of their cell dry weight as lipid content. The produced microbial lipids are mainly in form of triacylglicerols (TGA), that are rich in specific polyunsaturated fatty acids. Fatty acid composition of the microbial oils is similar to that of plant oils. The oleaginous microorganisms represents a potential raw material for biofuels production and also a sustainable alternative for the conventional oil industry. The use of the microorganisms for the oil production has economical, and ecological advantages. Microbial oil production is low time production process, independent on the environmental parameters and overcome the negative aspects of the plant oils production. Furthermore, reduction of the cost of the microbial oils production can be achieved by using low-valued nutrient sources such as agricultural residues, and industrial by-products. This paper reviews studies on the use of the selected strains of oleagineous yeasts for intracellular lipids production.
